Janet Ormond – Curb Beach Plastic Artivist – began creating art made entirely from plastic she collects off our local beaches in 2018 to heighten awareness around the devastating plastic pollution is having on our environment. Her work features elements of nature iconic to our Ocean and South Africa. It reminds us of how fortunate we are to live in a country full of incredible beauty due to the abundance of its unique biodiversity. The variety of plastic found and used in her pieces are endless. So many of them are unidentifiable and she often wonders what they once were, where they came from, and who they belonged to. She takes inspiration from the ability to express herself through her artistic activism to evoke thought through art that is both beautiful and devastating due to the material that she uses. Her hope is that her voice as an Artivist can bring about personal reflection and compel behavioural change to help solve this global pollution problem, which we all contribute to.
